Privacy Policy

The short version

  • Kavionel keeps track of the expenses you share with friends and groups, and works out who owes whom in each currency.
  • What you add to a shared expense is visible only to the people who take part in it.
  • We don't sell your information and we don't show ads.
  • You can delete your account from the app at any time.

1. Who we are

Kavionel is an app for sharing expenses with friends, couples, roommates and travel groups. It is developed and operated by Edgard Barquero, an independent developer. In this policy, “Kavionel”, “we” and “us” refer to him.

This policy explains what personal information Kavionel collects, how it is used and shared, how long it is kept and the choices you have. It applies to the Kavionel app for Android and iPhone, the service behind it and the website kavionel.com. If you don't agree with it, please don't use Kavionel.

2. Information you give us

  • Account. You sign in with your email address, using a one-time code we email to you, or with your Google account. We keep your email address and the name you choose. If you use Google, we also receive your name, email address and the link to your Google profile photo, which the app shows next to your name.
  • Friends. When you add a friend you give us their email address, their Kavionel code or, for friends without an account, just a name. If you ask us to, we send one invitation email to a friend who doesn't use Kavionel yet.
  • Expenses and payments. Descriptions, amounts, currencies, categories, dates, notes, who paid, how each expense is split and the group it belongs to. Everyone who takes part in an expense or payment can see it, and group expenses are visible to the members of the group.

3. Information we collect automatically

  • Notifications. If you allow notifications, we store a token for your device so we can tell you when someone adds you to an expense, records a payment with you or adds you to a group.
  • Usage. Events such as signing in, adding an expense or recording a payment, with your user ID, your email address and the amount and currency involved. They never include descriptions, notes, other people's names or emails, or your IP address.
  • Logs and errors. Our servers log every request with its IP address and, when you are signed in, your user ID and email address. If something fails, an error report with your user ID, email address, device model and app version is sent to our error-monitoring service.

4. How we use your information

  • To create your account, sign you in and keep your sessions secure.
  • To record your expenses and payments, calculate balances in each currency and show them to the people involved.
  • To send the emails the service needs: sign-in codes and the invitations you ask for.
  • To send notifications about expenses, payments and groups that involve you.
  • To understand how Kavionel is used and decide what to improve.
  • To find and fix errors, prevent abuse and keep the service secure.
  • To comply with the law.

We don't use your information for advertising, we don't sell it and we don't share it with anyone for their own marketing.

5. Who we share it with

  • People you share expenses with. Your friends and the members of your groups see your name, the expenses and payments you share with them and your balances with them.
  • Service providers. Companies that run parts of Kavionel for us. They may only use your information to provide that service:
  • Amazon Web Services: our servers and database, sign-in and invitation emails, and notification delivery, in the United States.
  • Google: sign-in with Google, and delivery of notifications to Android devices through Firebase Cloud Messaging.
  • Mixpanel: usage analytics, in the United States.
  • Sentry: error monitoring, in the European Union.
  • Cloudflare: DNS and hosting of kavionel.com.
  • Legal reasons. When the law requires it, to respond to valid legal requests, or to protect the rights, safety and security of Kavionel and its users.
  • Transfer. If Kavionel is ever transferred to someone else, your information would go with it and remain covered by this policy.

6. International transfers

Our service providers store and process information in the United States and the European Union, which may be outside the country where you live and may have different data protection laws. We only work with providers that commit to protecting it.

7. Security

All connections to Kavionel are encrypted with HTTPS. Sessions use short-lived access tokens, and the token that keeps you signed in is stored in your phone's secure storage. Access to our servers is restricted.

No system is completely secure, so we can't guarantee that your information will never be accessed without authorization. If a breach affects you, we will let you know as the law requires.

8. Your choices and rights

  • Your profile. Change your name at any time in Account.
  • Notifications. Turn them on or off in your phone's settings.
  • Your data. Export the expenses of any group as a CSV file from the app.
  • Your account. Delete it from Account in the app. It happens right away and can't be undone.

You can also ask us for a copy of your information, or ask us to correct or delete it. Depending on where you live, data protection law may give you other rights, such as objecting to some uses or complaining to your data protection authority.

9. When you delete your account

  • Your email address, Google photo link, sign-in methods and sessions are deleted right away.
  • Your name stays on the expenses and payments you shared, marked as a deleted account, so the balances of the other people stay correct.
  • Server logs and error reports that include your user ID and email address expire on their own at the end of their retention period.
  • Usage events already sent to Mixpanel are not deleted automatically. Contact us and we will delete them.
  • If you sign up again with the same email address, you start with a new, empty account.

10. How long we keep information

We keep your account, friends, groups, expenses and payments while your account exists. Server logs, error reports and notification delivery logs are kept for a limited time and then deleted automatically. We may keep information longer when the law requires it or to resolve disputes.

11. This website

kavionel.com doesn't use cookies, analytics or advertising trackers. Cloudflare, which hosts it, processes your IP address to deliver the pages and protect them from attacks.

12. Children

Kavionel is not meant for children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect their information. If you believe a child has given us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.

13. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as Kavionel changes. We'll update the date at the top and, if the changes are important, tell you in the app or by email before they take effect.

14. Contact

If you have questions about this policy or want to exercise your rights, write to the developer through his website.
